Everywhere you turn these days, sustainability and green building are there. Why is that? The reason could be it’s a fad and it’s the in thing right now. I don’t believe that’s why because of two reasons. First I believe the baby boomers are looking at their grand children and thinking to themselves, ” what kind of place am leaving for this child.” The answer to that question is found from looking back at how we have lived at times , if we were blessed to have things, a life of excess and wastefulness. We now realize those days can not be sustained 2-3 generations much less more than that. Secondly, the world is vastly different from the world of only ten years ago. My favorite author Thomas Friedman says “the world is flat again.” He says this because the world is truly one world economy now. Asia’s, India’s, and Eastern Europe’s new capitalistic economies are growing faster than ours because those markets have never existed before. We can thank the explosion of high speed internet for that. Those people deserve a chance and want to live like many Americans live. For that reason we must find ways to use less and do more with our resources. Our planets survival depends on it.
